Over the years, many students have failed to access their exam results and some have failed to sit for exams due to the lack of funds that can be used for tuition in many Malawian colleges. The introduction of the loan schemes for university students seemed to be the perfect solution to this problem but as time went by, it seemed to not only fail to fully satisfy the student needs but also failed to accommodate the rapidly increasing number of students that are selected to the various colleges making up the University of Malawi every passing year.
Many individuals as well as entities have continuously attempted to come up with an effective solution to this problem but to no avail, until the Polytechnic Students Union announced at their campus earlier this month during a General Assembly that they were to introduce an initiative that would seem effective and deal with this problem permanently.
“We have been thinking about this idea since last semester and we have managed to turn that idea into reality over the long holiday that we had. Now, it is time to help those students that fail to register due to scary fees balances and failure to raise the required tuition fee every year” one of the union members announced during the gathering.
As promised, earlier this week the PSU announced that they had come up with an SMS Promotion that is to be used as a tool of raising over 50 Million Kwacha which shall benefit all the needy students at the Polytechnic in conjunction with the Alumni Association. In an interview with the PSU Publicity Director; Joseph Kaluzi, we managed to gather more details on the promotion and what it is aimed at doing as time goes by.
“As the Polytechnic Students Union, we decided to help the people that elected us into power by tackling one of the biggest problems that the Polytechnic Community faces each and every passing year. Currently, we have involved the Alumni Association in coming up with the SMS promotion and details of the promotion are to be clearly revealed to the general public tomorrow, on the 21st of June 2019. This is to take place at the Polytechnic Main Lecture Theatre during the Official Launch of the promotion and we are to have Mr. Newton Kambala as the Guest of Honour and the event is to start at 12pm. Regardless of the outstanding organization and leadership that this project has, we are still calling out the general public to help us in every way they see fit. It is either they donate some money, assist in publicizing our cause, attending the launch and many other ways they can possibly think of. We will surely appreciate the support and we look forward to effectively and efficiently achieving our goal” he said.
As much as the project has taken the Polytechnic community by storm, there is need for the general public to seriously consider this project and assist in making this dream a reality. It is not easy to raise tuition fees and some students out there are dropping out because of such cases. So let us hold hands and assist those that truly need the help through the Polytechnic SMS Promotion that has been organized by the Poly Alumni Association and the Poly Students Union.
